A Retrospective On The Star Fox Series

Star Fox is undoubtedly one of the legends of classic gaming.  But man, where did it go?

The franchise is one that I’ve had a LOT of fun with in the past, and I’m quite sure many people recognize the name, as one of the greats.  However, if you ask anyone to name the most recent good game in the series, there’s bound to be some mixed, uncertain answers.  How in the world did Star Fox gain its reputation, only to disappear?  Well…it’s an interesting story, honestly.

So then, what happened to the adventures of Fox Mcloud and the Star Fox crew?  And what’s the series looking like now?

The Legend of Zelda: A Psycho-Analysis of The Usurper King

Anyone else hype to play the Switch?

Anyways, in honor of the release of the Switch, and of course, The Legend of Zelda, Breath of The Wild, I wanted to take a look at one of the best one-time villains of the series, Zant.

Zant, The King of Shadows, the Usurper King, was featured in the game, Twilight Princess, as seemingly the main villain.  Cold, intimidating, and powerful, Zant was extremely effective at being a dreaded presence for the player to confront, he was an antagonist that had tangible presence throughout the game.  However, come his actual boss battle, the facade drops, and he seems to go wild- throwing child-like tantrums, screeching maniacally, hopping around the battlefield, Zant displays his true nature as a psychotic lunatic.

That all being said, this behavior made me curious- what kind of person is Zant, really?  What caused him to be this way?  And of course, honestly, just what the heck is wrong with him?  Well, that’s what I’ll be exploring today-just what is the psychology of The Usurper King?

The Sales, Reception, and Popularity of Paper Mario!

When you look at Mario, your first thoughts certainly aren’t on the complex story, the complex game mechanics that his games exhibit.  He’s a simple character, perhaps the single best character in all of gaming to showcase the concept of “fun.”  As such a flexible character, he has seen all kinds of genres, from racing to action to sports, with one of his more surprising appearances being in the RPG genre.

Paper Mario has had quite the reputation in the Nintendo archive, and as such, has received attention over the years.  It is now a series, so far consisting of five individual titles, yet many people have only ever known the first three.  So, really, what happened to the series after that?  How did it do?

Today, I wanted to try something new!  I’ll just be comparing sales, reception, and general consensus on each part of the franchise, and see how it looks.  Do the sales match the reception?  Is there any trend to be seen?  Well, let’s find out.

The Legend of Zelda: Death in Majora’s Mask

Majora’s Mask is one of my favorite games of all time, and by a sizable margin, my favorite Zelda game of all time.  Not to say that the other games aren’t technically better- it’s just that Majora’s mask confronts topics and introduced mechanics that no other Zelda game has been able to replicate.  Among said topics was the everlooming threat of death, emphasized by the gigantic, terrifying moon right above your head at all times.  Twilight Princess may have tried to be much more explicit in its darkness, but truly, no other Zelda game has even come close to matching the tone, the otherworldly, strange, and dark nature of Majora’s Mask.

Today, I’d like to take a look at the game in a bit of detail, and cover the events throughout the game where death plays a huge role.  There are huge amounts of content throughout the game that I will undoubtedly explore later on down the line, but for now, we can just start looking at the role mortality plays in the game.  This won’t be very analytical, compared to other topics, but don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of that in the future.

Should I say a spoiler alert for a 16 year old game?  Well, spoiler alert- I’ll be talking about some very prominent events of Majora’s Mask that spoil some of the major events of the game’s story.  That’s all- without further ado, let’s get to it!

Throwback Gaming: Kirby Air Ride!

Kirby Air Ride was one fun game, am I right, or am I right?

My Top Five Nintendo Franchises

Nintendo is an undeniable icon of gaming, serving as the granddaddy of modern games as we know them, and the creator of arguably the most influential and powerful series of all time.  You know them: Zelda, Mario, Kirby, Metroid, freaking Pokemon!  These, among many other gaming icons, stand out as recognizable titans in the industry, and let’s be honest here, Nintendo has been the company to create the most historic franchises, compared to other companies.  That being said, I’d like to ask, which of these  franchises are the best?

These games mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people, and so, of course, there won’t be any singular BEST franchise that would be generally acceptable, but I’d just like to put in my two cents as to the best franchises Nintendo has to offer.  This is all opinion, and honestly, if you have any comments, or your own opinions on your personal favorite franchises, then by all means I’d love to hear about them.  With that out of the way, let’s get the list started!
