Reading Between Reviews: Attack on Titan, Season 2

Season 2 of Attack on Titan had a lot to live up to.

The series erupted onto the anime scene in a huge way, becoming an instant classic in the world of shounen anime.  This instant popularity only made it more notorious, when years began to pass without any confirmed sequel date.  So when this season was  announced, many people, myself included, were hyped as all hell.

And now that’s it out, we all have different opinions.  Some people lauded it as amazing, while others provided criticism for its poor storytelling. But me?

Well, it was an interesting season, to say the least.

Attack on Titan Analysis: Eren Jaeger’s Underappreciated Character Development

Eren Jaeger’s received some flak for his depiction in the Attack on Titan anime, for being a simplistic, basic character.  An angry, mindless protagonist who was depicted far better in the manga.

Well.  Frankly speaking, that’s not true.  Especially considering the release of Season Two, Eren’s actually been portrayed just fine in the anime, and I’d like to explain why.

Don’t worry- no spoilers here.

Well, Attack on Titan’s second season has been going on for quite a while, and there’s still half of it to go!   It’s been alright so far, but there’s honestly a lot more to it than that.  This season has certainly been exciting, but really, has it been meeting expectations?  Does it have that magical, special quality that we’re all looking for?

Some of My Favorites: Five Most Unexpected Moments of Anime!

Unexpected moments in anime can be rather rare, but when they happen, they leave an impact.

In recent years, people have learned how stories work. We call out who wins the battle, who’s bound to die, and when the big climactic betrayal happens!  It’s been put down to a science, “tropes” that are commonly seen in a story, that can be predicted, character types, plot twists, and big revelations that aren’t exactly surprising.  Because of how many stories we’ve experienced, many of us have become rather adept at predicting the coming events, making a good surprise in an anime a very unique treat.

These unexpected moments challenge what we think we know of a genre, and can come from many places.  They take our ideas of romance, of shounen, of drama, and flip them on their head.  And of course, for different people, they vary.  That being said, I remember five distinct moments in anime that really surprised me, personally, and I’m certain that they surprised others as well.

I don’t think it needs to be said, but beware: spoilers ahead!
