Though a protagonist’s eyes, we experience new worlds.
Playing a video game for the first time, the main character provides a means, through which we experience the world of the game. If the game is fun, dramatic, action-packed, the protagonist should generally reflect that. And of course, some protagonists do this job far better than others, bringing far more to the table than most.
These protagonists are my favorites in all of gaming. Their individual personalities, the ways in which they let the player experience the game, their general design, all combine to create memorable characters that stand as some of the best of the video game medium–at least, in my eyes.
Having said that–here’s my personal top ten protagonists of gaming!

The ability of a video game to pull off a good, old-fashioned plot twist is an indicator that it’s gonna be something pretty memorable.

Okay, being honest, I feel First-Person Shooters have received a bad rep, among game genres.
When you think of FPS games, odds are you don’t think much of the in-depth story, of the complex gameplay. They have created controversy regarding violence, spawned the stereotype of the vulgar, angry 12 year old, and, honestly, tend to be perceived as very simplistic. RPGs, Strategy, Adventure, Fighting, even Third Person Shooter games, considering Fallout and Mass Effect, have received far better reputations.
However- the FPS genre has a lot more going for it than bad stereotypes.
When done right, I firmly believe that the FPS games can excel in ways that other games simply cannot. The intensity and quickness that FPS games provide makes for exciting gameplay to watch, interesting story-telling, as well as, of course, unique interactions with other players. Despite the creation of toxicity at times, this communication with others has allowed for some great, great fun, something different than any other kind of video game. For this countdown, I’ll talk about some of my favorite First Person Shooters, the ones that exemplify the best the genre has to offer. The only rule here: just one entry per franchise is allowed. That being said- let’s start it off!

“A Hero is only as good as his villain.” This general thought, often attributed to Batman and his villains gallery, is profound in how we look at the villains of stories throughout time. Although the thought may not be 100% true 100% of the time, the threat that the villain poses certainly plays a huge role in the story of a game. The hero must grow to beat the villain, must overcome every challenge put in their way, and when done right, this journey can add so much to the narrative of a video game, cementing these particular villains as some of the best.
Today, we’ll look at the five antagonists that I personally enjoy the most. A combination of straight coolness, narrative importance, and in-game impact, is generally how I decide the few antagonists that make this list. There are a lot of good ones out there, threatening gamers across the world, but in my opinion, these five are the cream of the crop. With that said, let’s get to it!
