Some video games have the ability to create wonderful memories, even if they aren’t exactly perceived as great.
These are the underrated games–titles that have some quality, some merit, but are perceived by many as terrible or bad. For whatever reason, these titles end up being hated by the fanbase, or just hated in general, when I believe they deserve far better treatment than that.
Today, we’re going to talk about five of these kinds of games. This list will be based purely on my opinion, so if we disagree, well. I’d love to hear what your thoughts at the end of it!

The ending of an anime is what separates “great” from “legendary.”
An ending is the last hurrah, the thematic synopsis, the final moments in which an anime can distinguish itself from the rest.
These are some of my personal favorites, not the greatest literary, thematically satisfying, most powerful of all time. So, other endings that would probably be considered the “top” might not be here! Also, obviously, be prepared for spoilers!

Unexpected moments in anime can be rather rare, but when they happen, they leave an impact.
In recent years, people have learned how stories work. We call out who wins the battle, who’s bound to die, and when the big climactic betrayal happens! It’s been put down to a science, “tropes” that are commonly seen in a story, that can be predicted, character types, plot twists, and big revelations that aren’t exactly surprising. Because of how many stories we’ve experienced, many of us have become rather adept at predicting the coming events, making a good surprise in an anime a very unique treat.
These unexpected moments challenge what we think we know of a genre, and can come from many places. They take our ideas of romance, of shounen, of drama, and flip them on their head. And of course, for different people, they vary. That being said, I remember five distinct moments in anime that really surprised me, personally, and I’m certain that they surprised others as well.
I don’t think it needs to be said, but beware: spoilers ahead!

The Metroid series is without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite franchises in all of gaming. It’s a shame that there hasn’t been any new, great games as of late, but the series remains one of my personal favorites. The feeling of exploration, of traversing an unknown, strange world, and the feeling of growth you experience as you gradually add to your arsenal of weapons and tools, all blends so well in the series as a whole.
That being said, every game in the series brings something new to the table. It’s a new experience every time, with new weapons, new alien environments, and a new story to learn. Metroid has been a series with consistently quality games, and it’s honestly been hard to pick out my favorites. But, of course, I do have my favorites- some games that just stand above the rest.

The work of an independent artist can be amazing to see sometimes.
Whether it’s indie music, an independently written webcomic, or an independent game developer, having that control is both a blessing and a curse. Not restrained by quality controls, by specific rules and ideas, the artist in question can experiment to their heart’s content. And sometimes, absolutely great games are born as a result.
I’ll just be talking about the five indie games that I enjoyed the most, the ones I believe deserve recognition as some of the best. There are some games that have grown beyond this, such as Minecraft, so I won’t include them- rather, the games I’ll include have been independently developed by individuals, or small groups at best. That being said, let’s see what the best of indie gaming has to offer!

Oh dang. We gonna get some people mad~
Or. Well. If you agree with me on some of them, then I mean. Awesome.
It’s no secret that some anime are more popular, or more critically acclaimed than others. There’s going to be some anime that challenge conventions and revolutionize the genre, just like there’s some that just…aren’t very good. However, choosing which anime go on each side of the spectrum is often a matter of opinion. Some of the best anime of all time might be thought of to some people as overly complicated and unentertaining, while some terrible, low-budget anime can be lauded as someone’s favorite anime, and that’s fine. What is strange, and often raises debate, is when a large amount of people disagree on where to place an anime, andwhen many disagree on whether or not an anime isgreat, good, or just bad.
I’d like to talk about my personal ideas on what 5 anime are terribly overrated. Simply put, these anime are lauded by many as great, as favorites, as legitimately amazing stories, when I personally believe differently. Again, this will all be opinion, but I do believe my arguments hold some weight, as to the value of these anime. I won’t talk about simply how bad an anime is; the whole point is that these anime, in my eyes, seem to be perceived as much better than they actually are, even if they do have factors that deserve praise. With all the talk of definitions and specifics out of the way, let’s get started with the list!

Okay, being honest, I feel First-Person Shooters have received a bad rep, among game genres.
When you think of FPS games, odds are you don’t think much of the in-depth story, of the complex gameplay. They have created controversy regarding violence, spawned the stereotype of the vulgar, angry 12 year old, and, honestly, tend to be perceived as very simplistic. RPGs, Strategy, Adventure, Fighting, even Third Person Shooter games, considering Fallout and Mass Effect, have received far better reputations.
However- the FPS genre has a lot more going for it than bad stereotypes.
When done right, I firmly believe that the FPS games can excel in ways that other games simply cannot. The intensity and quickness that FPS games provide makes for exciting gameplay to watch, interesting story-telling, as well as, of course, unique interactions with other players. Despite the creation of toxicity at times, this communication with others has allowed for some great, great fun, something different than any other kind of video game. For this countdown, I’ll talk about some of my favorite First Person Shooters, the ones that exemplify the best the genre has to offer. The only rule here: just one entry per franchise is allowed. That being said- let’s start it off!

Sometimes, you just need to relax, don’t ya?
You just need sometimes to take some time off, turn your mind off, and enjoy life. Screw thinking about an emotionally powerful story, romance isn’t your deal, definitely not any of that horror crap- what do you want? Well, lucky for us, anime can provide us with some of the craziest, most nonsensical, most entertaining scenarios known in the history of mankind.
Anime has become renowned for its slight ludicrousness, and, although that is a huge oversimplification, there is something to say about that. Anime tends to be quite a bit larger than life, and some shows relish that fact, and use it to entertain. These tend to be some of the most ludicrous, ridiculous, but above all, freaking fun anime to watch. So, if you’re having a bad day, watch one of these shows- I guarantee you, GUARANTEE that one of these will be able to cheer you up to some extent. These are my personal pick-me-ups in the world of anime, and they’re pretty great, I think. That said, let’s get to it!
